It is known that you can turn into a villain or as a hero. In the present, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain, this time for Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. A formidable antagonist. The story follows the comic book plot and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is back. Taika Waititi’s quirky humor is evident. But, Love and Thunder, while being a great standalone film, doesn’t quite live up to the previous Thor sequel, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, but his individual films either failed to hit the mark entirely or didn’t hit the bullseye. While the origins tale of Thor (2011) was an acceptable start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was terrible entry. Yet, any list of top five MCU films should contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) without a doubt. The return of the Hemsworth – Waititi collaboration meant expectations were extremely high ahead of the release.
Gorr (Bale), God who seeks to wipe out all gods is a god who strikes New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining up with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend who has become Mighty Thor. This film is simple and straight-forward, which is different from previous Marvel films. The acting is good. Hemsworth plays the title character, who is in trouble in her midlife. But Bale as well as Portman are exceptional. To show Bale’s capabilities in the scene before the title credit appears. Gorr could well have been the next Thanos for MCU that’s in desperate need of good superheroes, and Bale is able to bring a certain oddity to the character but there’s no lot more.
Portman plays Mjolnir’s cancerous ex-girlfriend. With the way Marvel is keen on handing over the mantles of Hawkeye and, in a couple of weeks, Hulk, to women characters, I expected the Mighty Thor to be a similar checkmark in the representation checklist. However, the film offers up a touching backstory for the astrophysicist who can demonstrate her biceps in more than one scene.
Marvel also has its own acting in all of the cameos. In addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy team there are Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor respectively. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone can also be seen as Hela and director for an Asgardian play. Waititi, who has since Ragnarok directed Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his most loved genre. It’s funny to look at an image of a couple of loud goats as well as Korg’s narration on Thor’s backstory. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie becomes Old Spice’s ambassador.
Then there’s the running gag of Thor trying to find his Mjolnir, but being scared by Stormbreaker’s jealousy. Unfortunately, these gags, however effective, fall at the expense of deep emotion and serve to expose the thin plot. Thor: Love and Thunder covers a wide range of love, from a father-daughter bond to the complex romance of estranged lovers… It’s the resemblance between Gorr losing his respect for his god, Rapu, and Thor getting disillusioned by Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). These ideas are endless, but…
There are many references to movies like Harry Potter and Interstellar, as well as easter eggs. We are shown a picture of the god who died, Falligar, taken straight out of comics. We can see Hemsworth sporting the original Thor costume that comic book lovers will recognize. When Thor wears his armor during a battle with Zeus He gets to observe a tattoo which reads “RIP Loki The helmet of the trickster etched onto the back of our space-based Viking. The evil Necrosword is revealed, and it’s fascinating how more weapons are shown to be able to control individuals, considering the way Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seem to possess their own thoughts.
We’ve seen this before with the ten rings of Shang Chi, the magical bangle in Ms Marvel, and the Ebony Blade from the post credits scene from Eternals. The phrase “Gods don’t empower you however they will make use of the power of God to help you” from the new Marvel show, Moonknight, feels very similar to the real world. There’s also a little bit about Valkyrie lost her beloved love in the midst of war, and Korg finding love with another Kronan man.
It is easy to think of Ragnarok’s color palette in the beginning part, but much of the second half is set in the dark realm of black and white. It’s important to mention that the monochrome action scenes are quite satisfying.
Hemsworth as Thor will be here for a long time for the foreseeable future, and it’s great news for MCU fans who’ve witnessed the first Avengers either give up their lives, or hang up their boots.
